Teachings to avoid Indecency

VULGARITY/INDECENCY in speech is a widespread social evil today. People nowadays can be seen using foul language at the drop of hat.Today’s movies are also playing a big role in spreading foul language.Foul language emerges from a foul mind and is a sign of inner filth.As muslims we should desist from uttering foul words or calling people with insulting names,because its mentioned in a hadith that Momin(true believer) doesnot use foul language.

Allah Most High says, “O you who believe, let no men scorn other men, for they might well be better than they are. And let no women scorn other women, for they might well be better than they. And do not find fault with one another, or give each other insulting nicknames”

(Qur’an Chapter 49:Verse 11)

Salim ibn ‘Abdullah said, “I never heard ‘Abdullah ever curse anything.” Salim mentioned that ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr said, “It is not fitting for a believer to be a curser.”

{Reported by Imam Bukhari in Al-Adab Al-Mufrad,Hadith #309}

Hazrat ‘Abdullah reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “A believer is not a defamer nor a curser nor coarse nor obscene.”

{Reported by Imam Bukhari in Al-Adab Al-Mufrad,Hadith #312}

Hazrat ‘Abdullah said, “The most blameworthy thing in a believer’s character is coarseness.”

{Reported by Imam Bukhari in Al-Adab  Al-Mufrad,Hadith #314}

Almighty Allah dislikes a foul mouthed person

Hazrat Abu’d-Darda’ reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “..Allah dislikes foul language.”

{Reported by Imam Tirmidhi}

Hazrat Abu’d-Darda’ reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said,”Whoever has been given his portion of compassion has been given his portion of good. Whoever is denied given his portion of compassion has been denied his portion of good. Good character will be the weightiest thing in the believer’s balance on the Day of Rising. Allah hates a coarse, foulmouthed person.”

{Reported by Imam Bukhari in Al-Adab Al-Mufrad,Hadith #464}

Hazrat Abu Hurayra reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said,”Beware of injustice. Injustice will appear as darkness on the Day of Rising. Beware of coarseness.Allah does not love those who are coarse and foul mouthed. Beware of avarice for it destroyed those before you. They cut off their relatives. Allah summoned them and they made lawful what was unlawful.”

{Reported by Imam Bukhari in Al-Adab Al-Mufrad,Hadith #487}

Hazrat Abu Bakra(Radiyallahu anhu) reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Modesty is part of belief. Belief is in the Garden. Foul language is part of coarseness and coarseness is in the Fire.”

{Reported by Imam Bukhari in Al Adab Al-Mufrad, Aspects of Behaviour}

The noble character of our beloved Prophet(peace be upon him)

Hazrat Abu Abdullah Jadali reported that he asked Sayyidah Aisha (Radiyallahu Anha) about the  manners of Allah’s Messenger .She said, “He was never indecent of speech or of  manners. He never spoke loudly in the markets. And, he never returned evil with evil, but he forgave and overlooked”

{Sunan Tirmidhi, Book of Piety and joining ties}

Hazrat Abu Hurayra said, “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was asked, “Messenger of Allah, invoke a curse for us against the idolaters.’ He replied, ‘I was not sent as a curser. I was sent as a mercy.'”

The Order to be Mindful in Speech

Imam Malik related to me from Muhammad ibn ‘Amr ibn ‘Alqama(Radiyallahu Anhu) from his father from Bilal ibn al-Harith al-Muzani(Radiyallahu Anhu) that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “A man says what is pleasing to Allah and he does not suspect that it will have the result that it does, and Allah will write for him His good pleasure for it until the day when he meets Him. And a man says what excites the wrath of Allah and he does not suspect that it will have the result that it does, and Allah will write His wrath for him for it until the day when he meets Him.”
